About the Retreat:

grads meet at retreat

Do you feel like you are treading on water just to keep up with the demands of your work?

Are you tired of holding up the world and being everything to everyone?

Do you need to find the balance between professional success and personal wellness?

This OASIS Leadership Retreat for Nurses may be just what you are looking for. Take a weekend apart from work and family responsibilities to focus on cultivating the leader within. You will return to your workplace regenerated, revitalized and re-energized.

Over the course of this weekend, you will discover:

  • Principles of nurse leadership which will enhance your work relationships
  • The knowledge you possess as a nurse leader and how you can pass this on to others
  • The benefits of the mentoring relationship in nurse leadership
  • Insights into effective strategies for working with difficult people (colleagues /clients)
  • The value of hope in your day-to-day nursing care
  • The realities of abuse and violence in the workplace and strategies to address these issues
  • The balance between work responsibilities and personal wellness

Experience learning in a nature environment away from the sounds of downtown streets and crowded meeting places. Meet nurses from across Canada and spend some quiet moments to nurture yourself as you prepare to continue on the journey as a nurse leader!

Co-Facilitators:

Carol Hamilton

Carol L. Hamilton RN, CPIC, BScN, MDiv is a graduate of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto. She has worked in all clinical areas of Obstetrics as well as in Community Health Nursing. Since 1989, Carol has been in private practice in Toronto and more recently, Stratford, Ontario. Her work has included counselling and educating families from conception to the end of the first year after birth and she has conducted national and international workshops and seminars for professionals. Carol is author of two books, Overcoming Lactation Challenges and Nurse Entrepreneurship: Seizing the Challenge.

In 2001, Carol graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church. Since then, in addition to her private practice, she has been employed in congregational ministry, worked as National Director for the Nurses Christian Fellowship in Canada and most recently, has co-founded the federally incorporated corporation and Canadian registered charity, CHANGE HER WORLD. which has been created to enable girls and women in the developing world to be educated.

Carol brings a heart of compassion and expert knowledge and wisdom to any audience she addresses. Having been a nursing leader for more than two decades, she has much wisdom to share. Be inspired by attending this workshop!

Linda Willis

Linda Willis BA is a retired career educator with expertise in Special Education. She earned her degree in Sociology from the University of Windsor. She has taken various leadership positions in both church and community organizations which have included being member of the Board of Directors for the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre, Luminary committee chair for the Cancer Relay for Life - Chatham and more recently, President of the Perth Regiment IODE Chapter. She also travelled to Malawi, Africa with Carol in 2006 as part of a HIV/AIDS study visit and is chair of the newly founded Board of Directors for the not-for-profit corporation, CHANGE HER WORLD.

On her journey, Linda has encountered the challenges of single parenting, and been exposed to violence and addiction in others. From fear and hopelessness to the freedom of truth and dignity, she has come to recognize certain life principles which, if applied over time, can lead to wholeness and peace within self and in relationship with others. Linda brings a unique perspective to this retreat which will benefit all who attend.

Cost:

Pre-registration is required. A 40% deposit will secure your place at this retreat. The balance is due upon arrival on September 23, 2011. Fees include all meals, accommodation, retreat registration and materials, refreshments and HST. No post-dated cheques will be accepted. Written confirmation will be mailed or e-mailed when the registration and retreat deposit is received with receipts being issued at the retreat. Participants will be provided with a Certificate of Attendance for their Quality Assurance Portfolio.

General Information:

Refund Policy:
Cancellations will be accepted with a written request (less a $60.00 Administration Fee) up to 60 days prior to the retreat date. No telephone cancellations will be accepted. Refunds will be mailed after the workshop.

Should you become ill prior to the retreat, only one substitute delegate may be sent in your place. IPIC Education and Counselling Services must be contacted and the name and registration information of the substitute delegate provided.

Accommodations:
For more information about YMCA Geneva Park Conference Centre, please click here. You should bring comfortable shoes, casual attire, notebook and pen, camera, rainwear (as appropriate as you will need to walk outside between your accommodation building and the meeting room), and personal items. Towels, facecloths, soap and linens are provided. There are no televisions in the rooms so you may want to bring a good book to read during free time.

Continuing Education Units:
Each delegate who attends this retreat will receive a certificate of attendance. Please contact your professional organization directly regarding the acceptance of this retreat for Continuing Education Units.

Book Table:
A book table will be available to delegates. Cash, cheque or credit cards are acceptable forms of payment.

Other Requests of Participants:

  • No tape recording or other recording device of any kind is permitted at this retreat.
  • Specific dietary needs due to allergies, food preferences or diet are the responsibility of the participant.
  • Cell phones and other electronic communication devices must be turned off while lectures are in progress.

Transportation from Pearson International Airport in Toronto:
Please contact the office if you will require transportation to the retreat site from the airport in Toronto. The retreat centre is approximately 2 hours away from the airport. You should plan to arrive in the early afternoon on Friday in Toronto and depart no earlier than 6:00 PM on Sunday evening.
